BOOK REVIEW
I want to start with the warning: This is a romantic tragedy. There is no happy ending. If you need one, this is not your book.
With that out of the way: Ellie and Nate got me. The dual timeline is the smartest thing about this book. You watch two kids planning their escape from homes that were never safe, and you watch what's left of those same two people years later on an island neither of them chose, and the gap between those versions is where every bit of the damage lives. You get both POVs, so you get to hurt from both directions at once.
The setup is enormous. She survives a plane crash. She's stranded with the man who broke her. He's engaged to her sister. On paper it should be far too much, and mostly it isn't, because the book is genuinely honest about damage. Nothing gets tidied away, nobody is healed by being loved hard enough, and the wreckage is allowed to stay wreckage.
It's a debut and every so often that shows. There are stretches where the two of them circle the same grief without moving anywhere new, and I'd happily have traded some of that for more of them actually falling. The "we were always meant to be" arrives slightly ahead of the evidence for it, so if you need a fully earned burn before the heartbreak lands, you may find yourself wanting more groundwork underneath.
But the emotional weight absolutely lands. I finished it hollowed out, which is precisely what I signed up for, and knowing book two builds from here is the only reason I'm coping. Read the content warnings properly before you start. They're extensive, and they are not decorative.
“Then I will find you in our next life. I will find you in every life.”
If you loved A Love Letter to Whiskey or Under Your Scars, and you are the kind of reader who willingly signs up for heartbreak, Wrecked is your next read. It is a romantic tragedy in the truest sense: two people who were always right for each other and never once had the timing, stripped down to nothing and forced to face it. Have tissues nearby and check the content warnings first.
