2026 has been a ridiculous year for dark romance. Rina Kent released two of the best books of her career, H.D. Carlton came back and immediately ruined everybody, Shantel Tessier opened the year with something genuinely feral, and the dark romantasy shelf quietly took over the entire store. These are the dark romance releases that defined 2026, listed in release order, with something here for every level of tolerance. Every one of these is strictly 18+, and most come with content warnings worth reading first.
Chaotic (L.O.R.D.S. #7) by Shantel Tessier
Released: January 2026
2026 opened with a bang and the bang was Kashton Landon Pierce. Chaotic goes deeper into the Lords world than anything before it: controlling, obsessive, relentless, and built on the slow blur between survival and something far more dangerous. Possession masquerading as devotion, done properly. If you want to know why Shantel Tessier's readers are so unhinged about this series, start here.

Dove (The Soldiers of Bedlam #2) by Paisley Hope
Released: January 2026
The Hounds of Hell MC take care of their own, and Sean "Ax" Hunter is the kind of man who makes that sound like a threat. A former marine with a mind that never stops running, a Sergeant at Arms with a body count, and Layla Monroe, orphaned and out of options, who takes his money to nurse him back to health for two weeks and spends every one of those days fighting what she feels. The catch: the club that might have killed her parents is the one now paying her rent. Angsty, violent, protective MC romance with a hero who falls first and falls hard.

Of Ink and Alchemy (Black Rabbit #1) by Sloane St. James
Released: February 2026
One of the strongest dark romance debuts of the year and the opening of the Black Rabbit series. A darkly magical world of secrets, power and obsession, written with far more craft than the genre usually gets credit for. Sloane St. James moved from sports romance into dark romance and made it look effortless, and the follow-up, Of Karma and Corridors, lands in October.

Eldrith Manor by Leigh Rivers & Avina St. Graves
Released: February 2026
One ghost, one demon, one haunted manor. Two of the best dark romance writers going joined forces for a gothic paranormal about a girl who accidentally summoned the demon who killed her and is now trapped in a house with him for eternity. Sable and Lynx's banter is genuinely funny, the forced proximity is extremely literal, and the ending had readers in pieces. A collaboration that had no business working this well.

Slaughter Park by Lauren Biel
Released: February 2026
Lauren Biel leaned all the way into horror-adjacent dark romance and delivered one of the most talked-about releases of the first half of the year. Suspenseful, steeped in danger and obsession, and completely unapologetic about it. If you like your romance genuinely frightening rather than just spicy, this is your one.

Hunt the Villain (Villain #2) by Rina Kent
Released: March 2026
A serious contender for dark romance book of the year. Vaughn and Yulian's hate-at-first-sight descent into obsession is Rina Kent at her most tense and most heartbreakingly tender, and the Legacy of Gods fan service is unmatched. Two mafia heirs from warring families, in a world where they can never be together, colliding anyway. We reviewed this one and could not stop talking about it.

Game On (Into Darkness #3) by Navessa Allen
Released: March 2026
The third Into Darkness book, and the one that proved Navessa Allen can do dark enemies-to-lovers and laugh-out-loud rom-com chaos in the same chapter without either one suffering. Fake dating, blackmail, revenge and chemistry that could power a small city. If Lights Out converted you, this is the pay-off.

Bulletproof by K.M. Moronova
Released: April 2026
Why do we sabotage ourselves with the softest kisses from the scariest villains? K.M. Moronova's special ops dark romance drops Briar Thornton into the small Montana town of Bane Falls to settle her late uncle's estate and straight into the path of Roman Syxx, lieutenant of the covert Icarus Squad, in town under orders to infiltrate, eliminate and disappear. He was built as a weapon. She is the one thing that breaks him. Trauma-bonded, lethal and burning the whole way down, with a body count attached to the happy ending.

My Dreadful Darling (Hollow Graves Duet #1) by H.D Carlton
Released: April 2026
The return everybody was waiting for. Reverie Adams carries a serial killer's blood in her veins; Dreadful Sharpe wants vengeance on the family who murdered his mother. Two college seniors shaped by the same monster, one of them determined to make the other suffer, and a truth neither is ready for. Brutal, atmospheric and evil for ending exactly where it does. The conclusion, My Darling Reverie, followed in late 2026.

Crown Me Dead (Heartstring Duet #1) by Liv Zander
Released: April 2026
Wed me. Bed me. Slit my throat. The dark romantasy that took over every shelf in the store this year, and deservedly. A gravedigger's daughter is handed a bargain too cruel for daylight: seduce the King, become the Queen, die, and her brother lives. Kael is a rotting ruler of a festering realm, Vale is the cold architect of her death, and she is nobody's pawn. Beautifully written, genuinely devastating, and completely without a hero, because villains do it better. Book two, Crown Me Yours, completes the duet.

Crown Me Yours (Heartstring Duet #2) by Liv Zander
Released: April 2026
Wed him. Bed him. Slit his throat. The conclusion arrived less than a week after Crown Me Dead and finished the job on everybody. She killed the king and crowned herself in his blood, but the curse still festers, and breaking it means getting Death himself on his knees with a ring on his finger and a blade at his throat. A god who would rather tear himself apart than let her close, a woman who did not come this far to lose, and a haunting ending about love, grief and life that readers are still not over. Welcome to your wedding, my love.

King of Gluttony (Kings of Sin #6) by Ana Huang
Released: April 2026
Sebastian and Maya's rivals-to-lovers story is the darkest and angstiest the Kings of Sin series has been, and one of the biggest romance releases of the year full stop. Explosive tension, an obsessive hero and the emotional pull Ana Huang does better than almost anyone at this scale. The finale, King of Lust, arrives in April 2027.

Harvest Season (Seasons of Carnage #2) by Brynne Weaver
Released: June 2026
Brynne Weaver returns to Cape Carnage with the second book in the Seasons of Carnage trilogy, and it is exactly the gleeful, gory, weirdly wholesome dark romantic thriller cocktail her readers show up for. Suspense, secrets and villainous love in a town that is not remotely okay. Nobody makes murder this charming.

Tempting Venom (Vipers #3) by Rina Kent
Released: July 2026
Rina Kent's second entry on this list and her most nail-biting MM release yet. Preston Armstrong and Marcus Osborn are two unhinged, equally matched rival hockey captains who set out to annihilate each other and end up burning everything down instead. Vicious, obsessive, unbearably tense, and further proof that Rina Kent writing MM is one of the best things happening in dark romance right now.

Pink Ink by Avina St. Graves
Released: August 2026
Gothikana meets Dexter. A horror-obsessed film student notices the artistic references in a series of murders nobody else has connected, recreates one for her university film project, and unknowingly presents it to the man who committed it: her professor. Horror-soaked, suspenseful and unapologetically dark, and easily one of the best dark academia romances of the year.

Devil (Priest #4) by Sierra Simone
Released: August 2026
Sierra Simone returning to the Priest universe is always an event, and Devil is a smouldering forbidden standalone about a woman with nothing left and the man who has never stopped being obsessed with her. A bargain, a statue of Lucifer carved in his own likeness, and forbidden fruit as the only available salvation. No prior Priest books required.

That's our pick of 2026's best dark romance. Between Rina Kent's double header, H.D. Carlton's comeback, a genuinely excellent crop of dark romantasy and more morally black heroes than any one TBR can reasonably handle, it has been a stacked year. If you're already looking ahead, our dark romance releases coming in 2027 round-up has everything confirmed so far.
