Summary:

The Heartstring Duet is Liv Zander's #1 bestselling dark romantasy, a two-part story of deception, mystery, more deception, a handsome liar, and the woman who wants to bury him. It ends in a HUDDTPMYL, Happily Until Death Does Them Part Many Years Later, and what it very deliberately does not contain is a hero, because villains do it better. This world holds dark elements, violence, and themes some readers may find disturbing, so check the author's content notes before you start.

Crown Me Dead (Book 1) Wed me. Bed me. Slit my throat. Born in dirt and raised in rot, she digs graves for the dead while the living decay around her. When her brother coughs blood, he appears: a man far too polished for a graveyard, carrying a bargain far too cruel. Seduce the king. Become the queen. Die. And her brother lives. Kael is a nightmare of living ruin, the rotting ruler of a festering realm, and Vale is his shadow, the cold architect of her demise. One man needs her heart to beat. The other plans to stop it forever. They think she's a pawn, but she's the gravedigger's daughter, and she knows exactly where to bury them both. Welcome to the funeral.

Crown Me Yours (Book 2) Wed him. Bed him. Slit his throat. She killed the king and crowned herself in his blood, but the curse still festers. To break it she needs Death himself on his knees, a ring on his finger and her blade at his throat. The god fights her to the grave, evading her touch and mocking her wanting, willing to tear himself apart rather than let her close enough to end this. But she didn't come this far to lose. She came to crown him hers. Welcome to your wedding, my love.

Haunting, brutal, and devastatingly romantic, Liv Zander's conclusion is a story of love, grief, and life that has left readers worldwide in tears.

BOOK REVIEW

Crown Me Dead (Heartstring Duet #1)

Liv Zander opens this duet in the dirt and never once lets you up for air. Here is the setup, and I promise it only gets worse from there.

A gravedigger's daughter, born in dirt and raised in rot, burying the dead while the living quietly decay around her. Then her brother starts coughing blood — and a man far too polished to be standing in a graveyard shows up with a bargain. Seduce the king. Marry him. Become queen. Die. And her brother lives.

Except she's not the pawn anyone thinks she is. She's spent her whole life digging graves, and she knows exactly where to put the people who wronged her.

The dynamic between the two men is where it absolutely destroyed me. Kael — the rotting ruler of a rotting realm, a living ruin of a king who needs her heart beating. And Vale, his shadow, the cold architect of her death, who needs it to stop. One wants her alive. One wants her buried. Neither of them is a hero, and Zander doesn't pretend otherwise — this book is villains all the way down, and it's so much better for it.

And the deception. Layers of it. Lies inside lies. Every single time I thought I had it figured out — another twist, another reveal that recontextualized everything before it. Genuine whiplash. The plotting is vicious in the best way.

Then the ending. Torturous. Cruel. Absolutely nothing to be done about it except open Crown Me Yours immediately, which is what I'm doing right now. I'm not okay.

Heads up that it earns its dark tag — violence, body horror, genuinely disturbing content. Zander has detailed CWs on her site.

“I have longed for a wife longer than I have had a name for longing.”

Crown Me Yours (Heartstring Duet #2) ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

⚠️ spoilers for book one, obviously

Well. That's my whole personality now.

Book one ended in ruin and this one picks up in the aftermath — she killed the king, crowned herself in his blood, and the curse still isn't broken. It's still festering. And the only way out is to get Death himself on his knees with a ring on his finger and her blade at his throat.

So the second half of this duet is a woman hunting a god down the aisle. She's the one doing the pursuing, and he fights her every single step — evading her, mocking her wanting, willing to tear himself apart rather than let her close enough to end it. The reversal from book one is so good. In Crown Me Dead she was the pawn everyone else was moving. Here she's the one setting the board, and Vale is the one running.

And what got me is that it isn't just a revenge plot anymore. Book one was rot and hopelessness and bodies falling apart. This one turns into something about grief, and love, and being alive anyway. It's still brutal — Zander doesn't soften a thing, and there's still no hero in this book because villains do it better — but underneath all the blood it's a genuinely beautiful love story. I did not expect to cry. I cried.

The last few chapters had me completely unravelled. She breaks your heart and then she puts it back together and somehow that's worse.

Go in blind if you can. Read them back to back. Get someone to buddy read it so you have somewhere to scream.

CW-heavy, as with book one — full list on Zander's site.

5 stars. This duet has ruined me for everything else.

“That's the thing about moments. They're only that bright because they go out.”

If you want dark romantasy with real teeth, the Heartstring Duet is the one. A gravedigger's daughter with nothing left to lose, a rotting king, a liar in the shadows, and a curse that demands blood: Liv Zander builds a world that is grim and gorgeous in equal measure, then breaks your heart with it twice. Read them back to back, because you will not survive the wait between books.
